Central Hoops Greatest Run Ever!

2 Mar 2018 by Gerald Sledge

This run started and ended in the same city.
After the first half of district the Chargers finish 3-3 in a three way tie for fourth after starting 2-0.  Not sure where we stood in the mix of things for the remainder of the season we new we opened the second round of district facing a well coached, seasoned, and tough Timber Creek team that was looking for revenge for their loss in the first round.  To make things even tougher the Chargers PG Jakobe Kirk is under the weather and doesn’t play in a crucial 1 point loss making the district record 3-4 with the team now having to play at Abilene which is one of the toughest places to play.

The Abilene game is where things got turned around as PG Jakobe Kirk was out again under the weather but 2016-2017 Newcomer of the Year Latrell Jossell put the team on his back and became the team’s leader while 2017-2018 Co-Newcomer of the Year Kylil Anderson and 2nd Team All-District Forward Bryant Young helped him make noise for the remainder of the season beating Abilene, Haltom, Keller, Fossil Ridge, and Weatherford to finish district play tied for 2nd place with Fossil Ridge locking the Chargers in a playoff spot for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.  There would be a game to decide 2nd place vs. Fossil Ridge who had beaten the Chargers twice; once in a tournament and once one the Chargers home court which was the Chargers only home loss of the season.

Going into the 2nd place game the Chargers were on a five game winning streak and considered one of the hottest teams in the area.  With the win he the Chargers steak increased to six and captured 2nd place in District 3-6A and now will have to play Paschal High School who finished 3rd in District 4-6A in the 1st round of the state playoffs in the Bi-District game.  The Chargers beat Paschal for the basketball programs first ever playoff win and extended their winning streak to seven games. The Chargers run ended in Abilene where it all started as they faced a good Odessa Permian team who has made it to the Regional Semi-Finals.

Why is it the greatest run?
The team was not predicted to make playoffs in preseason predictions.
The team played without 2 starters and a key sub on their seven game wining streak.
The team won the first ever playoff game by a basketball, football, or baseball team.
The team put together the second best record in school’s history at 25-11.
The team was part of the first time all Keller schools made the Playoffs.
